Personal Information[]

Description[]

  • Tall and gangly, a kind of comfortable scarecrow in a baggy cardigan and wrinkled pants. His hair was pewter, a wild, interesting mop tangled around a long face that was somehow both scholarly and innocent. His eyes were the color of winter grass.[4]
  • He has an explosion of gray hair and a pair of knobby knees (which Eve found secretly adorable).[5]
  • Dreamy eyes and smelled a little like cherries.[6]
  • Dreamy smile and a grip like iron.[7]
  • Wears size ten shoes.[8]

Personality[]

  • His mind wanders and he is occasionally forgetful; though according to Dr. Mira, he is skilled at fining down a point to its most elemental level. She finds it helpful.[9]
  • He never pays attention to his or Dr. Mira's clothes.[10]
  • Delightful, absentminded and amiability appeared to be a common trait in the Mira family.[11]
  • As astute as he is absentminded.[12]

History[]

  • In August 2059, Mira said that she and Dennis would be celebrating their thirty-second anniversary next month. They would have been married September 2027.[13]
  • Known/Named family members:
    • Gillian (daughter to Charlotte and Dennis)
    • Callie (aunt to Lana)[16]
    • Anthony (son to Charlotte and Dennis)[17] married to Deborah (daughter-in-law)[17]
      • Matthew James Mira (grandson)[17]
  • Dennis taught at Columbia for years as a professor. He still gives the occasional course and often lectures.[3]
  • He graduated from Yale magna cum laude a year early. He was third in his class and Phi Beta. He served as class president his senior year and was the valedictorian. He was captain of the campus peace patrol during the Urban Wars. His cousin was a year ahead of him (would have been two when they started), and was 70+ in his class. He then went on to get his master's and doctorate from Columbia. He cohabbed with Charlotte Mira for a year before they married. They got married at his grandparents' house.[18]

Interesting Facts[]

  • He carries a pipe[19] and calls Dr. Mira 'Charlie.'[19]
  • Dr. Mira often discusses aspects of cases with him.[20]
  • Eve likes Dennis and has a little crush on him.[21]
    • As always when she saw the kind and dreamy eyes of Dennis Mira, her heart gave a little tug. Just something about him, she thought, with his cardigans and mussed hair, bemused smile. In her life he was the only person she actively wanted to hug the minute she saw him. Just press up against him, rest her head on his sloping shoulder and just... be there.[22]
  • He agrees with Dr. Mira that Eve is brilliant, complicated, and valiant.[23]
  • Wore a Mets cap at the cookout in Imitation in Death. He convinced Roarke that Roarke needs a grill.[24]
  • Eve cried on his shoulder.[25]
  • He accompanied the group to Vegas for Charles Monroe's bachelor's party; Dennis came home with a pair of pasties from a strip joint. He also won about twelve hundred dollars at craps in Roarke's casino.[26]
  • Charlotte and Dennis are patrons of Columbia.[3]
  • Charlotte and Dennis are very friendly with Peach Lapkoff and her family.[3]
  • IN late June, 2061, when he and Dr. Mira had grilled food with Roarke and Eve, he wore khakis and a green shirt that matched his wonderful eyes. His gentle kiss under Eve's aching eye told her the makeup hadn't worked; his follow-up hug wasn't quick, and Eve had to stop herself before she burrowed into the comfort of it. He smelled like orange slices. He smiled his dreamy, distracted smile as he accepted a drink, but kept an arm around Eve just another moment. Her stress level plummeted and her stomach unknotted.[27]
